Recipe post!

8 02 2010

Went to a crazy food party at a friend’s place recently.

They had pizza.  This pizza was homemade (I helped!).

So, here is a rough reckoning of the recipe, modified to my taste and kitchen inventory:

  • Mozzarella
  • Cheddar
  • Parmesan (optional, imho; I haven’t been using it)
  • Pizza-crust-in-a-can (Walmart has it, it’s near the biscuits-in-cans, and kind of tastes similar)
  • tomatoes (1.5-2 is plenty, unless you REALLY like tomato)
  • onion, garlic (fresh is optional; I use minced onion and garlic powder. Fresh onion and no garlic was on the party version.)

Roll out pizza crust as instructed on can; if you’re adding veggies beyond just the tomatoes, you’ll want to prebake it for about 4 minutes.  Thinly slice the tomatoes, and follow suit for any extra veggies.  Pile on crust as thick as you like.  Sprinkle lots of each kind of cheese (may want to mix them first?) on the pizza.  Put in oven for however long it will take the crust to cook (~15 minutes on the kind I used).  Remove from oven, let cool, eat!

Most reading this probably already know I’m not big on veggies… but this is pretty good!  I like the tomatoes REALLY thin and spread out, so there’s no sudden CRUNCH in my mooshy goodness.

PS it’s hard to cut thin slices with a santoku.  That’s the only non-serrated Kitchen Knife I have :(   Lost my old paring knife.

We interrupt this program…

To bring you a new edition of Learn Something New Every Day!

Apparently, Occam’s Razor is so named in reference of “the act of shaving away unnecessary assumptions to get to the simplest explanation.”

Meanwhile, back to studying.  The odds are good that there will be no signs of existence here until at least Friday.  Random Analysis (a.k.a. Probability) test tomorrow ;)

Hello, World.

21 01 2010

I took a break from forums, blogs, and “real-life” hobbies over the break.  I spent most of my time playing with code and playing D&D Online… But now the semester has (about a week past..) begun, and real life happens.  Hello.

Knitting… I (finally!) ran out of yarn on that red scarf I’ve been working on, and now have an estimate of how much it’ll take.  I need two more skeins.  Maybe I’ll have it ready for next winter… I really needed it a few times.  It’s been pretty cold out!

Crochet… Haven’t since I got hooked on knitting (pun slightly intended, for the reverse-osity).

Baking!  I am learning to make bread.  I had flour, milk, and eggs, and I thought, “Hey, that’s bread, right?”  Not exactly, it turns out.  That’s pancakes, crepes, or blini.  At least now I know where they got the translation “blini = pancake” from… the similarity ends at the ingredient list.  They are similar to crepes.

But that’s not the important part!  The important part is that I discovered a recipe for tortillas (so a half gallon of milk went to waste, but at least I used eggs for other purposes)!  Delicious!  Roommate already knew how to make corn tortillas, but… not so big on those myself.

So tortillas!  Delicious.  Then I got some yeast… the dry kind, in packets, from the store.  I keep having to reassure myself.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, don’t worry.

So I made yeast rolls!  Well, the internet called them French Bread Rolls, but… French bread is delicious.  These were not.  They looked right, smelled right, but they taste… green.  I know, synesthesia doesn’t solve anything, but that’s the only description I have for it.  I know there was too much yeast, but it’s hard to measure out of those little packets.  Luckily, NomsyLee, roomie, and roomie’s boyfriend like them.  So there’s only one left.  If it’s not eaten by late tonight, it’s going in the bin–these rolls (according to The Internets) only last a few days.

I’m sure a few of you are wondering where your packages are.  I have 3 sets ready–decided to make 6 per set, with a couple of several sizes.  My jewelry pliers have gone AWOL, though, so production has been put on an unexpected extended hiatus.  I’ve got a few ideas of where they might be hiding, but so far searches have resulted in nothing :(

I seem to have run out of things to say.  Hmm.

Reminder

6 11 2009

If you commented on the contest post and haven’t sent me your mailing address, I need it within about a week if you want to recieve stitch markers.  Contest is closed, so no additions, but I wanted to make sure that those who posted and wanted to enter were actually entered.

If you already sent me your address, you don’t need to resend.

Chatter Post

3 11 2009

So I’ve mostly been whining lately.  Time to chatter about life, and generally be positive.

This morning it was really foggy out.  It looked cold from my window, but it was actually pretty nice out.  Nice and cool, so the walk down to Holtz was nice.  I ran to catch up with Nick and we commiserated over the test we were walking toward.

Had advising.  I finally know for sure that I’m pronouncing my advisor’s name right.  Discovered while planning for advising that I only have 11 hours + 2 hours research first semester next school year, and only 9 (that’s right, 3 less than full time!) senior year.  So count the 6 hours for the Gen Ed requirements I’m missing, and I have 15 hours one semester, 12 the other.

I think I’m going to take Chinese.  Apparently it’s taught really well here.  Kacey’s been teaching me some.  I can say 中国 (Zhōnggǔo — China) and … aww man, I forgot!  :(   Well, at least I still remember “ni hao” and “ni hao ma?”

Three out of four tests down.  Electromagnetics tomorrow, and then I register for classes.

And for NaNoWriMo, my word count is 3531.  5000 is today’s goal.  I’ll probably put it on hold until tomorrow afternoon.  3333 words isn’t that hard to write, especially when about 200 of them are already done.

Bunnies.

3 11 2009

Quick note to comment that a common base transistor circuit looks like a bunny.

I can’t find any circuits via a quick google search that look like the one in the book, so I show you, courtesy of B2Spice and Photoshop:

I’m claiming this as proof that I’m studying.

Busy times

1 11 2009

Sorry again for taking so long with the stitch markers… I’ve got quite a load right now. I missed two tests this past week (home sick; I’m fine now), and now have three next week since I have to make up one of them. The other is being exempted (with extra weight on the final. Yikes!). At least I don’t have four tests next week… Owww, that would hurt my poor brain.

On top of this, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo. What can I say? I look forward to it all year. I’ve got 2044 words, so I’m ahead as of 3 this morning–and have no excuse not to study.

Well, now that I’ve pointed that out, I have to stop procrastinating and get back to work… Microcontroller Interfacing notes await!

The frenzy slows, but doesn’t stop.

12 10 2009

The Roo pattern has arrived!  So much happiness.  I’m still undecided on the yarn, though.  Ordered some of the di.Ve’ to try out, and I liked it a lot, but I think I’m going to need a chunkier yarn.  I’m frogging the hat that I started making with it, just because I’ve decided I don’t like the pattern as much as I thought I did.  Go figure.  It’s just not as much fun as expected.

Quick review of the di.Ve’–it’s VERY soft, smooth… I love the texture.  It IS a little splitty, especially when knitting right after the cast-on, but it’s not nearly as bad as some reviews made it sound.  Once you get past where the casting untwists the yarn, there’s no splitting, at least that I noticed.  The color is very even throughout the skein, too.

Now, on to the contest… Those of you in Canada: I’m trying to figure out how to make USPS happy when I send, and trying to figure out if I can send international from my local post office.  I DO plan to send to you.

To everyone who participated: I’m just now starting on the markers.  Sorry, but it’s been a busy… I can’t even count the weeks.  This week is a bit of a break; only two assignments, and they’re due NEXT week.  Phew.  So I can get the markers under way, and figure out postage.

And as I’m back home and have neither camera nor knitting projects (other than the wire and such to make stitch markers), I really don’t have anything else to show off :/  But I wanted to update and let everyone know how the “prizes” are doing :)

The frenzy continues!

24 09 2009

Thanks to everyone who has replied to the next post down… There are still 3 slots open, and I’m just now getting started on those stitch markers.  (Hang on, double checking… *counts on fingers* Yep, 3 spaces left. )

(Yes, I’m an engineering student who forgot how to count.  At least I can still count on my fingers in binary.)

I got out of lab early so I thought I’d update before my next class.

I just finished Baby Hat #6, and took a group picture!  The sizes vary quite a bit; one of them I’m worried won’t fit on any baby’s head, one of them will probably wait in a drawer for a month or two.  I don’t spend much time around anyone under the age of 10, so I’m not really sure how big a baby’s head is.  In the picture, the DPNs (8″) and bottlecap are there for reference.  I’m not sponsored by Coca-Cola.  (If they were paying me to knit and blather about knitting, though, that’d be kind of cool.)

Tadaa!  I tried not to cling too closely to the “girls like pink and boys like blue” thing.  I was always fond of BRIGHT RED.  Well, now I like blue.  But red is still fun.

The purple (and all of these are Simply Soft Eco, by the way), aka Mulberry Mist, looks kind of rough and grey indoors, but I worked on that huge one outside for a little while… it GLOWS this really nice warm purple.  I’ll have to try to get a picture outside before I send these wherever they are going.

Interested in the patterns?  The cute froggies are based on Sammakkopipo (Ravelry pattern page)–I just used two repeats of the chart.  I don’t speak Finnish, unfortunately.  The smaller purple hat is directly from Preemie Hats for Charity (Ravelry | Pattern site).  The blue cable-ish looking one is Mock Rib and Cable Hat (Ravelry | Pattern site).  It turned out much smaller than expected, so if you knit tightly and/or only have DPNs two sizes smaller or 3 sizes bigger (like I do), you may want to add a repeat or two around. The lavender and off-white striped hat is a simple K3/P3 rib, and the green with pompom is a few rows of garter stitch, stockinette with decreases based on Preemie Hats for Charity.  (Finally, I understand why they keep getting those weird little points on top!)

Anyway, today has (so far) been much better than expected.  I stayed up pretty late studying for the test I had at 8 A.M., neglecting the homework that’s due in half an hour.  I did that homework when I got back from the test, then went to lab, which took about an hour less than the given time, and half an hour longer than I had anticipated upon reading the lab.  (I forgot to connect a jumper.  Oops.)  Amazingly, I’m not tired!  Need to eat, though.  Can’t get real food until after class.  I think I’m going to make Lee (he’s on Ravelry now!)

Well, time to get my notebooks and such back together so I can get to class on time!

Roo~

16 09 2009

A very wonderful person on Ravelry (Happy Birthday, Rosebelleknits!) has indicated that she’s going to send me a the pattern “Roo” that I’ve been drooling over…  The plan is to play with the pattern to make it fit me!  I’ll be posting on how THAT goes…

Meanwhile, it’s time to pick yarn!  I really like this yarn– Di.Ve’ Zenith.  I want washable and warm… and decided wool’s probably the way to go.  I can’t seem to pick a color, though!

100_5571So.. here’s a picture of me, which I previously posted to show off the scarf… and a picture from the pattern site.

That kid is so cute .

(It’s up to you to decide if I’m being narcissistic).

And now, for a CONTEST.

I think contest actually isn’t the best word for it, but I don’t know what else to call it.

I would like suggestions on which color to use, or suggestions for other yarns if you know of one that’s better.  (Like I said, I much prefer washable yarn–meaning I can put it in the washer, and also the dryer.  I live in a dorm, and there’s not much room for a line or a rack to dry things on.)  The first ten (10) repliers who also email me their mailing addresses will receive some homemade stitch markers (made by me, in assorted sizes).  If you are a crocheter and would like crochet stitch markers rather than knitting ones, please specify in the email–otherwise, I will assume knitting.  My email is Xlopsy.Xli@Xgmail.com.  Remove the Xs–they’re there to (try to) block spambots.  It will probably be at LEAST a week before I send these off.  I have the supplies, but not much time right now–lots of tests over the next few weeks.  So please be patient :)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to study!  (I’ve a test tomorrow and a test on Friday, and tomorrow night I start work tutoring… Busy me!)

I’m on a knitting spree!

14 09 2009

That’s right.  A knitting spree.

As of a few hours ago, I have knit (since last post, and to completion) two baby hats, one for-me hat, an armband for myself, an armband for my brother (might have mentioned it in last post?), and… well, that’s it.  Still!  It’s a lot, and most of it was done in about 2 days.

Last weekend, I went to DragonCon.  I had lots of fun.  I plan to cosplay next year.  Yes, I’m a nerd.  But I liked DragonCon much more than all the other conventions I’ve been to… mainly because it wasn’t specifically an anime con, so I actually knew some of the characters that I saw running about!  I went to some drawing seminars and some writing seminars.  I knit an armband.  I ran around Atlanta (okay, I walked one block).

I am sleepy and just wanted to update on existence…  But here is a fun comic I made after taking pictures to show off my latest finished piece (my first colorwork, as well as my first pompom):

On Friday, while frantically trying to finish homework. I spilled soda on my laptop.  I’m currently typing on a borrowed external keyboard.

I shouldn’t be using my computer right now, probably, to prevent further damage… but I’ve got reports to write.  Break’s over.  Till next time…

Hallo there!

3 09 2009

I’m still alive!  Really :)

Life has gotten quite busy.  Classes have started, and even though it looks on paper like I’ve nothing going on, the fact that I’ve done about 3 problems on the homework that’s due a week from now is a sign that I’m WAY behind.

I’ve just “baked” one of those 5 minute chocolate mug cakes and am waiting for it to cool so I can devour it.  Modified slightly–I used butter instead of oil, a little more vanilla, and only nuked it for 2 minutes, 30 seconds 3 minutes; I just went over and found that it was undercooked.  Hopefully, it will be more edible than the last try… the top was too dense to eat! :(

(Just took a bite mmmm that is wonderful.  Tastes like REAL cake!)

So I said I’d post pictures of the spinning… I haven’t worked on it since my roommate moved in (aside from showing her that I have a spindle and yes, that is yarn on it, and here’s how it’s done…).

This is the best picture I’ve managed to get of it… the lighting’s not great in here, and my camera is not happy… That is to say, I need to get batteries.

Slightly random… I thought batteries used to be sort of / kind of  / almost cheap?  Because I think that $7 for 4 AA batteries is RIDICULOUS.  Gonna go to a real store and see if they’re any cheaper.

Meanwhile, I’m working on a red scarf (Ravelry|Pattern) for when it gets cold outside, a skirt of my own design (Ravelry), and I’ve recently finished a hat (Ravelry|Pattern) for my roommate.

Anywho, I’m swiftly running out of things to say and the time to go to lab approaches.  So here are some pictures:

On the left is the bottom of the skirt, i.e. the hem.  It’s about all I’ve done, but I think it’s lovely so far… But that opinion is a bit biased.  You know.  Toward myself.

And to your right is a hat.  This hat was made by me for my roommate, and turned out very different from the pattern.  I blame it on my inability to count.

And for your edumacation… Hmm…  As I need to hurry and finish eating so I can go to lab, I’ll leave you with a link to a book (that is partially online, courtesy of Google and the authors).  The thing that I need to read in this is about springs and dashpots (mainly the dashpots).  It was brought up in class as though the professor assumed all of us Electrical Engineering students knew what a dashpot is already… so I’m looking it up.  In short, a mechanical system can be modelled using electrical circuits… A dashpot is equated to a capacitor, and a spring is equated to an inductor.  (Wikipedia links)  At least, I think that’s how it works; now I can’t find anything on these pages to verify this :(

Vocab of the day + SOCKS

25 08 2009

Dendrochronology: Tree ring dating.

I finished my socks!  I’m wearing my socks.  I’m annoying my roommate by reading everything I write out loud.  Loudly.

Pictures!

I was flipping through wikipedia.  Which is how I found this.  We started this with Shepitko and are now on that (dendrochronology).

Knitting group, school, and crazy parties.

21 08 2009

Today we’re going to start off with a very brief segment of our not-so-daily “Learn Something New Every Day!”

This however-long’s comes from the New York Times (and also my embedded systems class): DNA Evidence Can Be Fabricated.  While DNA analysis is pretty expensive and tedious (from what I’m told, no sources on this), it’s become the “indisputable” evidence in some cases.

Slightly off-topic, beware of yes/no answers in court.  A former teacher of mine was once asked, “Is there ANY possibility that two people can have the same fingerprints?”  Of course, as no one has taken the time to track down all 6.7 gigafolks in order to check and compare their fingerprints, it’s incredibly unlikely but technically possible.

Now for a quick update on projects… I’m still working on the second sock, and a hairband, and I’ve started on a skirt of my own design.  Whoo!  As I’m kind of busy (classes have resumed, and I already have a pile of homework), I’m not posting pictures here just now… but if you’re on Ravelry, you can check out my projects page for pictures.

Meanwhile, I’m organizing a knitting group in Clemson!  Our first “meeting” is going to be Saturday (tomorrow) around 6 at Spill the Beans (in Clemson).
That’s really all I’ve got for right now.. sorry for the lack of updates, but it’ll pick up again soon. :)

“Out of sight, out of mind…”

16 08 2009

Wow.  I can’t believe I forgot to mention in my last post…

I suppose there’s reason for it, there’s a good bit going on right now despite the fact that this week was (supposedly) free time.

Tobey sent me a toy wheel, an eye-hook, and some roving, and I put these things together and started spinning!  Thanks, Tobey!!

I have no idea how much I’ve made; I left fluff on the end so I can continue whenever.  LOTS of roving left!  I’ll post pictures and more about the whole project soon!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I obviously need to get some more sleep…

Socks and baby hats!

15 08 2009

I’ve been working on some of the most addictive projects in all knit-dom: Socks and Baby Hats.  Never mind the pretty shawls and scarves, the cute tops and spiffy skirts… No.  SOCKS.  And BABY HATS.

I’ve learned from this that I prefer double-point needles to Magic Loop.  Sure, the first thing I learned was ML, but I just find DPNs more comfortable.  Weird?  Maybe.  But I figured out that if I don’t put them up to my face, they can’t poke my eye out! ;)

So I now have 3 pairs of interchangeable tips with four cables, plus one pair of addi lace needles.  Guess I’ll be using them primarily for lace, though I’ve got a baby hat on the KP nickel-plated.

Regarding these new needles:  I like the cables that came with the KnitPicks much better than the Addi.  They’re no more flexible, but they seem to have less “memory.”  I have not tried any of the tricks I’ve heard of to help with that.  I also haven’t actually used any of the needles besides the nickel-plated tips from KnitPicks.

So here’s the initial take on the needles:  All of the KPs came in clean, smooth, no problems that I can tell.  They come with “key” to tighten and loosen, which is handy.  It never ocurred to me that it might be needed, but it certainly is!  I like the texture of all four pairs (on the actual needle, now).  The nickel-plated KPs are smooth, seem to be without any kind of extra coating, but don’t seem to, so far, take on oil from my hands.  The wooden “Harmony” needles are also smooth… They came already waxed, it seems.  I was thinking I might need to go find some wax paper, but I didn’t.  The Zephyr acrylic needles are a little strange, to me, but I’m looking forward to trying them.  They don’t feel much like plastic, more like a light metal–but not as cold initially, and I think probably less hot after a while (I have hot hands, which has caused problems in art class).  They aren’t as bendy as some of the larger ones look in the videos.  It’s just a little give.  I need to try them to find out just how handy this is… I keep thinking it could make some of my tightness issues worse.  But, I don’t know yet.  So don’t give up on them yet, if you’re debating.  The Addis are nice and smooth.  The coating on them doesn’t seem to affect temperature or texture of the needle greatly–good for those of us who like metal needles.

That’s all I’ve got on the needles so far… I’ll be trying them out once I have a few WIPs out of the way.

So back around to the beginning, baby hats and socks!  I have one sock and 2 rows of a second.  I used Peaches&Creme cotton, perhaps not the best idea, but here’s how they look:

And here’s the project page on Ravelry (with a silly shot of “conquering the DPNs“).

Meanwhile, I’ve finally gotten back on the baby hats, which will be donated whenever I have a pile.  (The patterns I’m using are for preemie hats, but it’s easier to just say “baby hat.”  They’ll be either mailed off or taken to the local hospital, depending on whether there’s a program for it in my area and if I can get a ride.)  I’ll post pictures when I have more…  Tigr will be modelling the hats, and likely also the socks!  Poor Tigr.

The duel continues… with Sausage Balls!

13 08 2009

Well, my dear friend Tobey responded to my response to her Chocolate Chip Scones Recipe with a Tuna Dip!  Well, that’s just cutting it too close with the styles… So now it’s time for my family’s New Year favorite: Sausage Balls!

Quite easy to make, these are.

  • 1 lb each hot and mild sausage (or modify ratio to taste)
  • 3-4 c. sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 c. Bisquick

Mash up the sausage, cheese, and bisquick into a dough.  (Just use your [CLEAN] hands.)  Then roll into balls about 1 inch in diameter (smaller is typically better, within reason).  Place on cookie sheet and bake at about 350 degrees (Fahrenheit) for about 20 minutes.  Let cool enough to not burn your fingers, then devour.  Extras can be stored in the fridge or freezer, depending on how soon you plan to eat them.

Delicious things are delicious! (Crabs: DO NOT READ THIS POST)

13 08 2009

In a desperate attempt to attract more readers (and to be silly with friends on other blogs), I am now writing up a recipe.

Yes, I’m putting it here, on a knitting blog.  Deal with it.  If you can’t deal with it, wash a needle really well and use it to stir.  I recommend using the 8mm or larger, 14″ if you’ve got it.

LopsyLi’s Delicious Crab Dip

  • 1 lb fresh (or fairly recently canned, but NOT frozen) crab meat
  • 8 oz cream cheese (yep, that’s the whole container), to room temp
  • 1/2 onion (more or less to taste.), grated or finely chopped
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (don’t sneak any before you start, or there won’t be enough!  Maybe you should get a second bag, just in case)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (that’s right, “mayo” has 2 Ns)
  • Tobasco sauce (to taste–taste-testing recommended)
  • Worcestershire sauce (to taste–taste-testing recommended)
  • Old Bay Seasoning (to taste–taste-testing recommended)
  • salt/pepper (to taste–taste-testing recommended)
  • your favorite spices/seasonings (to taste–taste-testing recommended)

Once the cream cheese is to room temp and any ice that mysteriously formed on your crab meat in the freezer is thawed, mix everything up in a big bowl.  Shoo cat frequently.  Put it back in the fridge for a while.  Devour with crackers.  Serves as many as you are actually willing to share with, up to about 5 or so.  I suggest having it between you and one very good friend, so you can do this two or three times.  But that’s just me.

Man, now I’m hungry again.

This is a fairly decent dorm recipe–all you need is the fridge space, a bowl, two forks (to mix with), and some kind of covering for the bowl.

Lacy things

12 08 2009

(I’m tossing this into the “Tutorials” tag as well, as that’s where the proposed idea will likely go).

So today I went to the movies with some kuh-razy kuh-nitters. These were part of the group that gathers at Yes Yarn!.  The movie was Julie & Julia, a movie based on a book based on a blog (which, I suppose one could say, is based on a cookbook–though it might be a bit of a stretch).  My opinion?  Funny, cute, but if you’re looking for more detail to the plot than was explicitly shown in the advertisements, you will be disappointed.  Overall, however, I enjoyed it.  If you want a good light-hearted comedy, go see it.

Now, on to the main point of this post:  I have just ordered three KnitPicks needle tips with one cable and just purchased a pair of Addi Lace needles.  The needles are as follows:

  • KnitPicks Harmony Wood — US8/5.0mm
  • KnitPicks Zephyr Acrylic — US4/3.5mm
  • KnitPicks Nickel-plated — US6/4.25mm
  • Addi Turbo Lace — US6/4.25mm

The KnitPicks are interchangeables, and will be sharing a 40″ cable.  The Addi needle is on a 32″ cable.

I got different sizes because I figured that if I liked all of them enough to use, I could save some effort in getting specific sizes by already having a variety.

So here is the plan: I am going to pick comparable lace patterns for each size and work a segment of it.  Then, I am going to post a review of all four types of needles–which I like best, least, and WHY.  I know I’m not covering a huge amount of variety by just using these two brands, but these are the two brands whose names are tossed around the most.

I also have a pair of Boye circular needles, which I have been using for all non-DPN circular work to date–not that there has been much.  They are, I believe, size 8.  My only complaints are that the join between needle and cable are a little easy to catch stitches on, and the sudden change in size on the needle makes it difficult to slide stitches back onto the needle once they’ve been on the cable for a while.  If anyone is interested in me including these in the “competition,” please comment to let me know.

I think that I may do a video review, including some video of working with the needles.

So far I have only ever worked with aluminium needles, and aluminium or steel crochet hooks (mostly aluminium).  This will not only be my first branch out into the world of lace/circular needles, but also into nonmetal, or at least non-aluminium, needles.

EDIT: I think that this pattern (view on Ravelry) might make a good testing pattern, since it’s fairly simple, doesn’t call for exact gauge (so I don’t feel the need to worry a whole lot about sizing), and is free.  Please do comment with any suggestions for patterns to use.  (I chose a scarf/wrap worked in rows without increase/decrease in order to get an idea after only a few pattern repeats of the needle function/comfort of use.)  I will likely use a few different yarns just to be consistent of the relationship between the working gauge and the needle size (so no worsted with the US4 needles, probably.) but will try to keep these similar in texture.

“I’d rather be knitting”

8 08 2009

Finished moving into the new place.  It’s smaller than the last place and I’ll have a roommate, but so far it’s pretty much bug free, and it was clean when I moved in.

This is much better than the last apartment already–there was a spaghetti noodle on the wall when I moved in there.
So now I’m working on a baby hat.

Yes, you heard me right.  No, I’m not expecting.

I’m making hats for premature babies.  The “I Wish I Could Knit!” group is doing this along with our regular KALs, and I decided that since I’m not much for dishcloths, I’d try out a circular item.  So far it’s fun, though my fingers are sore from the tiny dpns.

Here it is, being reluctantly modeled by Тигр… His head’s a little too big, so I had to take a few more pics.

So… This is going a little slowly (due to my inability to stay focused), but pretty well!  I think once I finish this, I’ll try again at making those “yoga socks,” then perhaps I’ll get into (gasp) socks.  Uh oh, I’m on the road to true addiction.  I even took a video of knitting some of this.

Anyway, I’m a little worried that I’m slowly turning into Dolores from Dead Like Me.  I’ve started giggling, and now I’m knitting things that I will never use.  Soon, I’ll be making someone a pencil sharpener cozy!

Meanwhile, I’m trying to decide what kind of yarn to get for that jacket I found in Interweave Knits…  (Quick recap–I found the pattern on Ravelry, then out of sheer luck managed to pick up the right one at a library book sale)  I’d like something washable, relatively cheap, but still durable and cozy.  I haven’t decided on color yet, though I’d like a “normal” solid rather than a tweed (disregard the name of the pattern: Backstage Tweed Jacket).

I went to WalMart on Thursday night to get yarn and double pointed needles to start on the baby hats… I got 3 skeins of Simply Soft Eco and one cone of Peaches&Creme.  So far, these have been my “favorite” yarns, and the ones I use most often.  Go figure.

Right now, that is my entire stash, and all the knitting supplies I have.  The rest is at Lee’s place, along with all of those magazines.  Fortunately for me (though perhaps not in terms of progress in unpacking), he’s bringing the giant box of yarn/supplies over, as well as the magazines.  Finally, I can weave in the ends on the wedding present!

Well, I need to get back to knitting if I ever want to finish this hat…

And yes, I just said that I NEED to knit.

And now for your not-so-daily segment, Learn Something New Every Day! (LSNED)

The topic I picked was migraines, because I’ve been having a lot of them lately, and have one right now.  (Yes, I’m still on the computer, no, I don’t have any sense.  It’s a very mild one, just over the eye and temple.  Just wish there were other light sources in here besides lamps.)  Some of this information is my observations, some is from Wikipedia.

Migraines are, basically, very bad headaches, so you can imagine how frustrating it is to miss a day of work/school because you couldn’t turn on the light… because of a headache.  Some have what is called an “aura” before the migraine hits–a sensation, whether visual, auditory, or tactile, sometimes even olfactory.  The migraine itself is the pain, often accompanied by nausea (and sometimes vomiting), altered vision (eg, tunnel vision), and sensitivity to light, sound, and/or strong odors.

I could go on for a good long time here, but I don’t want to do that–I just wanted to give the basics above to explain to those who don’t already know what migraines are.  What I want to point out is what my “a-hah!” moment was today, when skimming the page:

Migraine attacks may be triggered by:

MedlinePlus medical encyclopedia[42]

Now, I knew some of these.  My pediatrician, when I was about 7, told me not to drink red wine.  I think he was trying to be funny, but I took his words seriously and at face value.  I’ve found that certain food combinations make me sick, certain settings.  I don’t get an aura, but instead sort of a pre-headache, and that alone could tell me that I should avoid that potential trigger from then on, even if that feeling didn’t lead to a migraine.  I stopped eating pizza or anything with red dye for years.  It’s made me even more of a picky eater than I already was, which is pretty bad.

But what really got me, reading that, is that I have always hated bacon, and been iffy about most sausages–I generally dislike them.  The smell of bacon cooking can make me feel nauseous.  Home-cooked breakfast was torture.  This perhaps explains it.

That’s all I have to say, except that now that I’ve rambled about that tiny weird detail of my life, I’m going to go keep reading to see if they have any information on the link between migraines and epilepsy.  I’ve heard, but have never found written anywhere, that the two are linked.

Edit (from wikipedia, links preserved):

The incidence of migraine is related to the incidence of epilepsy in families, with migraine twice as prevalent in family members of epilepsy sufferers, and more common in epilepsy sufferers themselves.[88]
